Curriculum & Instruction
Although a variety of curriculum resources are available to the teachers at Horizons Christian Academy, BJU Press curriculum is the core of instruction from kindergarten through middle school. BJU Press curriculum provides opportunities for students to develop their knowledge, apply process skills, and integrate instruction across subjects while incorporating Biblical truths.
Language Arts
Subjects included in language arts instruction are: Spelling, Handwriting, English (Writing and Grammar) and Reading. Each of these language arts components are designed to provide repetitive practice of basic skills while creating opportunities to apply these skills through a variety of writing and reading assignments.
Spelling texts highlight generalizations in spelling patterns as well as unique words. Interesting historical facts about word origins are also part of this component. Handwriting practice through the elementary grades creates time for students to improve the presentation of their writing, and they learn why good presentation is important to communicate effectively.
In English, students first learn specific grammatical concepts and then apply them in appropriate writing assignments. In both writing and reading, students learn to integrate phonics and meaning/comprehension strategies to write and understand stories. In upper grades, Writing and Grammar continues with the addition of Literature studies to help students learn to interpret and evaluate literary elements such as conflict, character, theme, and point-of-view.
Mathematics
Mathematics instruction uses concrete manipulatives to introduce math concepts. Problem-solving skills are developed by applying strategies to real-life word problems which are expressed in math equations. Christian principles and character traits are integrated by incorporating math concepts in the Bible. Early math is made enjoyable through theme characters, read-aloud stories, games, and the use of manipulatives. Instruction for upper grades continues to develop critical thinking skills and application of mathematical concepts. Courses include Fundamentals of Math and Pre-Algebra.
Science
The goal of the science curriculum is to balance knowledge of facts with active participation. Scientific literacy is evidenced when a student can apply science once he has learned it. Enrichment activities are used to reinforce or extend concepts. Students learn the processes involved in the scientific method. They are shown how science is integrated into everyday life. Biblical truths by their very nature are found in the study of God's creation. Science shows the order and precision of God's creation and inspires curiosity and appreciation of His works.
Social Studies
In elementary grades, Heritage Studies emphasize historical facts and geography while also focusing on Christian philosophy, character, and attitudes. Studying history chronologically helps students build connections between events. In addition, general topics are revisited through a spiral pattern throughout the year or across grade levels. History instruction continues in upper grades with subjects such as World Studies and The American Republic.
Fine Arts & Extra-curricular Activities
- Our Interpretive Worship Team truly sets us apart from other fine arts programs. The team incorporates dance and drama with worshipful song to create a powerfully moving worship experience.
- Physical education, computer lab, music, and art are some of the courses offered. Fine arts courses are subject to change from year to year.
- Elective courses are being introduced in upper grades through our Methods classes as outlined in the Leadership Preparation Strategy section on pages five and six.
- Older students can participate in student council and volunteer to mentor younger students.
- Older students planned and implemented various ministries and outreach programs. Some of these include: shut-in ministry, prison ministry, care packages for elderly, organizing fundraisers for Operation Christmas Child, March of Dimes, St. Jude Children's Hospital, and others.
Assessments & Standardized Testing
Assessments have many purposes. They can measure:
- Student growth over time
- Comparisons among students
- Teaching strategies and strengths
- Areas to improve the curriculum or instruction
Adjustments are made based on these assessments to better meet students' needs. Horizons will continually make assessments and adjustments to improve the curriculum, instructional decisions, and student achievement. Assessment options include but are not limited to:
- Stanford 10 testing in the spring
- Writing Assessments to measure use of phonics, spelling, conventions, and language comprehension
- Running Record Assessments to measure reading strategies and comprehension
- Mathematics Assessments
- 'Math Facts' skills tests to review and polish computation skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- In all subject areas, classroom tests and assessments are administered to measure progress
Spiritual Development
Spiritual growth is promoted as the faculty and staff live-out Biblical truths daily. Other opportunities for spiritual growth include:
- Bible instruction for all students that targets Biblical characters, anti-characters, and character truths as well as scripture memorization
- Weekly chapel held by staff and guest speakers who share God's word. Godly character traits highlighted in the Leadership Preparation Strategies are woven into the devotions during Chapel. Students worship in song and have opportunities for individual and corporate prayer.
- Classroom devotions that provide a platform to demonstrate how to begin our day with prayer and time in God's word. Students are encouraged to participate in discussions about Scripture and share prayer concerns or praise items.
Academy Electives
We believe we can offer our children greater exposure to life and Christian living by adding electives to our curriculum. The electives will be compatible with our strategic leadership plan for our children. Our emphasis on leadership is different than most schools and so our list of electives will be somewhat different as well. Electives may include:
*Bible is taught as a subject area
